The primary goal of Regional Center for Medicinal Plants (RCFCs) is to empower and strengthen the managerial and technical skills of stakeholders within the Medicinal Plant sector. These stakeholders include collectors, growers, farmers, traders, industry representatives, R&D institutions, line departments, and academia. To achieve this objective, RCFC NR-I has been actively organizing training programs, workshops, and seminars for these stakeholders.
One of the key initiatives of RCFC NR-I is to identify the stakeholders and tailor appropriate training programs to enhance their capacities. These training programs cover various aspects, including Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Field Collection Practices (GFCP). Efforts are being made to develop species-specific GAP and GFCP for plants like Giloy, Adusa, and Amaltas, with a focus on region-specific GFCPs.
Medicinal plants have gained prominence as a commercial activity, contributing to the national GDP and offering an alternative option for livelihood generation alongside traditional agricultural activities. However, as this sector is relatively new for many stakeholders, there is a need to educate and train them comprehensively on different aspects of medicinal plants.
Training is considered a crucial tool for the success of any program as it instills motivation, confidence, and improves efficiency among the participants. Recognizing this, RCFC (NR-I) prioritizes organizing diverse training programs and exposure visits for stakeholders in the medicinal plants sector regularly.
To design effective training modules, RCFC staff has studied the training modules of various institutions and agencies engaged in this field. As a result, the following fields have been identified for training:
- Ex situ cultivation on private land to meet the growing demand for crude drugs and replace conventional collection from the wild. This sector plays a vital role in providing genuine inputs to the value chain and promoting commercial Medicinal Plant enterprises.
- Training for collectors from wild sources to ensure sustainable and responsible collection practices.
- Training on post-harvest management and handling of collected materials to maintain the quality of medicinal plants.
- Training on semi-processing, value addition, manufacturing of different products, and marketing to add value to medicinal plants and make them more accessible to consumers.
By focusing on these training areas, RCFC NR-I aims to equip stakeholders in the Medicinal Plant sector with the necessary knowledge and skills to harness the full potential of herbal wealth for both commercial and logistic utility.
